House Feng Shui, Five Methods to Resolve Sha Qi, Five Emperor Coins, Screen Partitions
Ah, when one speaks of Feng Shui (风水), many a soul thinks it is some mystical mumbo-jumbo. But let this old Daoist tell you plainly: it is nothing more than the wisdom our ancestors accumulated over millennia — a "Way of Harmonizing with One's Living Environment." Whether your home feels comfortable, whether things flow smoothly or not — often, it truly has something to do with how the house is laid out and what objects surround it.
Today, this humble Daoist shall not speak in empty riddles. We shall speak in plain tongue: If your home truly has encountered some "Sha Qi" (煞气 — baleful energy), how on earth do you break it? The core lies in five characters — Move, Block, Transform, Fight, Avoid (挪、挡、化、斗、避). It is like facing a little monster in a game: first see if you can move it aside; if you cannot move it, then block it; if blocking fails, find a way to transform it; if all else fails, you fight it; and as a last resort, you avoid it entirely.
一、First, Let Us Speak of the Main Gate: How to Block "Trouble" from Outside?
The main gate is like the mouth of the home — all Qi (气, energy) enters through here. If something is amiss at the door, trouble will surely follow inside.
You open the door and right there is an elevator shaft (开口煞 — "Open Mouth Sha"): This is as if someone stands at your door, mouth agape, staring right at you. Over time, money slips through your fingers like sand, and family members fall ill often. What to do? The simplest remedy: place a pair of bronze lion statues inside the door, or hang a small plaque of "Lion Biting Sword" (狮咬剑). The imposing energy rises at once.
A narrow gap between two tall buildings points straight at your home (天斩煞 — "Heaven-Slashing Sha"): Picture this — two great blades with a thin slit between them, and the wind comes slashing through that gap with a whoosh. Living in such a house, family members become short-tempered, quarrel endlessly, and may even face minor surgeries. Remedy: Place a Dragon Turtle (龙龟) at the entrance or on the balcony, facing that gap. The turtle shell can bear the weight of that "blade Qi."
A streetlamp or utility pole sits directly across from your door (顶心煞 — "Heart-Piercing Sha"): Every day you step out and "bump" into that pole. People become hot-tempered and their vision grows blurry. Little trick: Press a string of Five Emperor Coins (五帝钱) under your doormat. It will dissolve that clashing energy.
A road rushes straight at your front door like an arrow (路冲煞 — "Road-Rushing Sha"): Like an arrow shot at your chest. Living here, accidents happen easily and careers stagnate. Most effective: Build a screen partition or foyer in front of the door to make the road "hit the brakes." Planting tall, broad-leafed plants also helps to cushion the blow.
The road or river outside your door curves like a great bow, with the back of the bow facing your home (反弓煞 — "Reverse Bow Sha"): This is as if someone has drawn a bow and aimed an arrow right at you. Loss of wealth and bloodshed are likely. Remedy: Hang a covered gourd (葫芦) with Five Emperor Coins inside, or place a pair of Qilin (麒麟) — they are specifically in charge of this matter.
Someone is digging a pit or demolishing a building on your right side (白虎煞 — "White Tiger Sha"): On the left stands the Green Dragon (青龙), on the right the White Tiger (白虎). When the White Tiger side is disturbed with earth-moving, family members fall ill and wealth is lost. What to do? Press two strings of Five Emperor White Jade (五帝白玉) beneath the wall on the right side. If the inauspicious star of the year also strikes, add a pair of Qilin and a gourd.
A building across the street has a corner that juts out like a knife-point aimed at you (尖角煞 — "Sharp Corner Sha"): This makes people ache here and there, and they are always getting cut or scratched. Method: Hang a "Lion Biting Sword" or a convex Bagua mirror on the window — but be mindful not to point it at your neighbor's window. That would be most impolite.
The wall of a building across the street seems to slice toward you like a blade (壁刀煞 — "Wall-Blade Sha"): It feels as though a great sword descends from the heavens. Accidents are likely. Keep it simple: Hang a convex mirror to reflect it. If the wall is especially long, a "Mountain-Sea Plate" (山海镇) works even better.
二、Now Let Us Look Inside: How to Adjust the "Awkwardness" Within?
Once the outside is blocked, the inside must not be in disarray either.
The front door leads straight through to the back door or balcony (穿堂煞 — "Piercing Hall Sha"): The wind rushes in and whoosh — it's gone. Money cannot be saved, and people always feel exhausted. Best solution: Build a foyer or screen partition in the middle so the Qi can take a turn, "sit a while" inside the home before departing.
A beam presses down on your bed, stove, or desk (横梁煞 — "Crossbeam Sha"): Sleeping under a beam feels as though something heavy is always pressing on you. Nothing inspires you to act. Remedy: Place a crystal ball under the beam, or during renovation, build a false ceiling to wrap it up. There is also an old folk method: hang a red string with two bamboo flutes on the beam — the meaning is to "transform Sha into sound."
Two doors face each other directly (门对门 — "Door Facing Door"): People quarrel, get on each other's nerves, and catch colds and coughs constantly. Simplest fix: Hang a door curtain or bead curtain over both doors — then the two doors can pretend not to see each other.
The bed faces the bathroom door directly: The smell and dampness from the bathroom blow straight at you. Couples quarrel easily, and health problems follow. What to do: Move the bed immediately. If you cannot move it, hang a long curtain over the bathroom door.
A mirror faces the bed directly: You wake up in the middle of the night and startle yourself. Over time, sleep becomes restless. Method: Cover it with a cloth, or simply move the mirror elsewhere.
The back of the bed is empty or faces a window (无靠背 — "No Backing"): The heart feels unsteady, and money is hard to save. Adjustment: The head of the bed must lean against a solid wall. The more stable the backing, the more stable the heart.
The stove and the sink face each other directly (水火打架 — "Water and Fire Fighting"): The household is full of conflict, and wealth is constantly lost. Balance it out: Place a ceramic ornament in between. Fire generates Earth, and Earth overcomes Water — it serves as the perfect buffer.
The bathroom faces the front door, bedroom, or kitchen: That smell... just thinking about it is enough. Living long in such conditions, how could one's health be good? Must do: Keep the bathroom door closed at all times, hang a curtain, place a screen partition in between, and maintain dryness and ventilation.
You see the stove the moment you walk in (开门见灶 — "Open Door Sees Stove"): People become short-tempered, and the heart and blood pressure follow suit. Solution: Build a foyer at the entrance to block the view, or relocate the stove.
三、Now, a Few "Universal Remedies" That Work in Almost Every Case
If you find the above too troublesome, or if your home has more than one problem, the following methods will cover you in almost every situation.
1. Place Some Auspicious Objects
| Object | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Five Emperor Coins (五帝钱) | They manage a bit of everything. Press them under the front door mat, or hang them where things are not going well. |
| Gourd (葫芦) | Whether copper or wood, hang it at the door, by the bed, or in the bathroom — it transforms Sha and protects peace. |
| Pixiu (貔貅) | Specializes in attracting wealth. Face its head toward the door or window — it sucks wealth in from outside. |
| Golden Toad (金蟾) | Also absorbs wealth, but its mouth must face inward — do not let it spit the money back out! |
| Dragon Turtle (龙龟) | Guards the home and bears Sha. Wherever something clashing points at you, let it face that direction. |
| Crystal Ball (水晶球) | Place it in the living room, at the wealth corner, or under a beam — it purifies the energy field. |
| Mount Tai Stone Tablet (泰山石敢当) | Guards the home and fills missing corners. Wherever you feel empty or unstable, place one. |
2. Grow Some Green Plants
Choose those with round, large leaves — such as the Money Tree (发财树), Happiness Tree (幸福树), or Monstera (龟背竹). Placed at the wealth corner, they activate prosperity. Heed this well: Do not grow plants with sharp, knife-like pointed leaves. If leaves turn yellow or wither, replace them immediately — otherwise, it only makes things worse.
3. Adjust Colors and Lighting
Do not let the wealth corner sit in pitch darkness — install a lamp to shine on it. Only when it is bright and clear can wealth gather. Use beige and soft orange in the living room for warmth; soft blue and pale green in the bedroom for restful sleep. If you believe in the Five Elements (五行): if you favor Wood, grow more green; if Fire, use more red; if Earth, add yellow; if Metal, add white; if Water, bring in blue.
4. Set Up a "Triple Set" at the Door
| Location | Item | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Outside the door | Paste a "Fu" (福 — Blessing) character | Attracts good fortune |
| Under the door | A colorful doormat, with wealth-activating coins beneath (e.g., five coins) | Welcomes prosperity |
| Inside the foyer | Hang a jade fish pendant with "Year After Year of Abundance" (年年有余) | Transforms outside Sha into wealth Qi |
四、A Few Stubborn "Special Sha" That Are Harder to Deal With
| Sha Type | Description | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Reflected Light Sha (反光煞) | Glass curtain walls or water reflections across the street dazzling your eyes | Apply frosted film to windows; hang a gourd or convex mirror |
| Piercing Heart Sha (穿心煞) | The house is built above a subway or tunnel | Place a copper gourd and Five Emperor Coins where the Qi is strong |
| Blade Sha (刀刃煞) | The wavy parking canopy downstairs looks like a razor blade | Face a Dragon Turtle at it — the turtle shell blocks it all |
| Centipede Sha (蜈蚣煞) | Wires and pipes on the wall are tangled like a centipede | Place a copper rooster or carved wooden rooster — the rooster eats the centipede, you see |
| Lone Peak Sha (孤峰煞) | Your house stands alone with no building nearby — no "mountain" to lean on | Place a mantra gourd and copper gourd at an auspicious position |
| Recessed Wind Sha (凹风煞) | Your house has a recessed section | Use the Mountain-Sea Plate (山海镇) generously |
| Funeral Home / Hospital Sha (殡仪馆、医院煞) | Such establishments are nearby | Hang a Mountain-Sea Plate or Bagua mirror, keep a perpetual lamp burning inside, and place a Green Dragon ornament |
Final Words from This Old Daoist
Feng Shui, when you strip it bare, is simply this: believe and it exists; it is for the peace of the heart. Let us not twist ourselves into knots over it.
In practice, the highest priority is always — if you can change the layout, change the layout. Move a bed, add a screen. If you cannot change it, then block it with something — a bead curtain, a potted plant. If that still does not work, then use auspicious objects to transform it. As for Bagua mirrors, convex mirrors, and other reflecting items — use them last of all, and be most careful not to point them at your neighbor's home, or you will shatter the neighborly relationship.
The most important thing of all: keep your home clean, bright, and well-ventilated. That in itself is the finest Feng Shui! Living with comfort in your heart is more powerful than any ornament. If the problem is truly severe, do not fumble about on your own — find a trustworthy old master to come and assess the site in person. That is worth more than anything.
